Proposed Skills Standard

Preamble

At 12th Night AS38, Their Majesties Ædward and Yolande requested that Sir Hugh the Little write a document for Council discussion regarding the appropriate skill level indicators to use in consideration of candidates to the Order. He presented the following document at Festival AS38.

Practical fighting considerations :-

  • Calibration
    Does the candidate have a consistent and fair calibration?

  • Consistency
    Does the candidate fight to a consistent standard?

  • Adaptation
    When faced with a new technique and style, can the candidate adapt to compensate?

  • Attack
    Does the candidate have an effective style/well rounded attack i.e not just relying on one or two shots, or a particular technique like gun slinging?

  • Defence
    Can the candidate defend themselves adequately against a range of weapons?

  • Record against Chivalry
    Does the candidate have a proven record against members odf the chivalry? Does the candidate train against members of the chivalry when available?

  • Variety of weapons used.
    Can/does the candidate use different weapons such as great sword, axe and mace?

  • Is the candidate an authorised marshal?

  • Basic courtesy - both on and off the lists
    Do they corkscrew opponents on their knees/face opponents into the sun? Can they offer and receive input and criticism e.g. with regards to calibration and technique.

    Social considerations

  • On-field appearance
    Is their appearance in the lists consistent with what would be expected with a member of the chivalry, for example a painted shield and appropriate surcoat, minimal use of duct tape and ice hockey gloves,

  • Attitude/Personal development
    Does the candidates carry themselves in such a manner that will enhance the reputation of the order?

  • Heraldry
    Does the candidate have a registered name and device?

    Peerage considerations

  • Do they train?
  • Do they teach?
  • Are they an active member of the Kingdom and local group?
  • Do they help new-comers?
  • Are they trying to develop their craft beyond what it already is?
