HistoryThe successful Ottoman siege of Constantinople took place in 1453 and was very closely contested. Time was not on the sultan's side. Bringing so many of his troops together to converge on Constantinople left his borders vulnerable. Thus the last emperor Constantine Paleologos knew that he need only hold out long enough for the Sultan's enemies to invade his lands or for the Venetians or the Papacy to come to his aid.
