Submission Requirements

Cost: $20 per new submission (name, device or badge). No cost for resubmissions (within the permitted time limit) or branch submissions. Note: a new name and device costs a total of $40. Make cheques or money orders payable to "SCA Inc. College of Heralds". Do not send cash through the post!

Copies required:

NAMES: Two (2) copies of both the form and ALL documentation, including title page of each book NB: The title page is not the same as the book cover! Essays about a submitter's persona may be entertaining, but do NOT constitute documentation. When citing web sites as documentation, you must include a printout of the pages used. Please don't staple your forms, paperclips are fine and loose is ok too.

DEVICES AND BADGES: Four (4) colour copies and one (1) black & white OUTLINE copy. The colour copies should be accurately coloured, preferably in felt tip pen. Colour printers or faint coloured pencil is not acceptable. The colours must be visible across a crowded Herald's meeting. Laurel has requested that gold pen NOT be used, as it deteriorates in files and turns to glue. Please don't staple your forms, assuming that all goes well at kingdom level they are separated and go to four different homes. Paperclips are fine and loose is ok too.

Please include ALL necessary documentation to support each submission. It is the responsibility of the submitter to present their submission in a way that makes registration easy. Name documentation should be as accurate as possible. Failure to provide sufficient documentation is a cause for return of your submission. If you are having trouble with your documentation then speak to your local herald. If they can't answer your specific question, consider writing to Blazons, or contacting me. If I don't know the answer but I will at least be able to point you in the direction of someone who will.

Submissions Forwarded to Laurel

1. Caterina Sansovino

New Name

The submitter seeks a feminine name authentic for 15/16th century Italy. She will allow no changes.
The name is constructed according to the principles that may be found in Arval Benicoeur's "Fourteenth Century Venetian Personal Names" [http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/arval/venice14, accessed 14 Jan 2005].
Caterina may be found in Arval Benicoeur's "Feminine Given Names from the Online Catasto of Florence of 1427" [http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/arval/catasto, accessed 17th Jan 2005]. The article indicates that Caterina was the most common given name in the sampled Catasto, which included 148 instances of the name.
Two artists of 1500's Italy used the surname Sansovino. The more famous of the two, Jacapo Sansovino, apparently took the name of his master Andrea Sansovino. We were unable to find a period source for the name, however, given its widespread (and consistent) use and the fact that it is relatively late period we hope that the College will have more luck. There are numerous web-sites that use the name, such as the 1911 Britannica [http://87.1911encyclopedia.org/S/SA/SANSOVINO_JACOPO.htm, accessed 13th Jan 2005] and the Catholic encyclopaedia [http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/13453c.htm, accessed 17th Jan 2005].

2. Eleanor of Caithness

Badge Resubmission

Per pale sable and argent, a quiver and two arrows overall two swords in saltire counterchanged.

This badge was originally returned by Crux in December 2004 for lack of identifiability. This new version rectifies the pervious problems.
The submitter's name was registered in June of 1996 via the Kingdom of the West.

ELEANOR's device

3. Hrothgar æt Gytingbroce

Change of Holding Name

The submitter seeks a masculine name and will accept no changes.
The submitter previously submitted Hrothgar æt Gytingbroc (ie, the same name but without the final "e" on the locative). This name was returned on Laurel's October '02 LoAR, where the submitters holding name "Hrothgar of Rowany" was assigned.
" The byname {AE}t Gytingbroc is not properly constructed. Metron Ariston explains:
There is a problem here since not only would we expect the lower case in the preposition but also correct grammar. The preposition {ae}t takes a dative noun and the expected dative of the place name would be Gytingbroce. (The final "e" is the mark of the dative singular for strong nouns like broc.) The Letter of Intent, however, indicates that the submitter will not allow such a change.
As the submitter allowed only a change from {AE}t to {ae}t, if necessary, and allowed no other changes, we were unable to correct the grammar of the byname in order to register this name."

The submitter now wishes to follow the recommendation provided by the LoAR.
Withycombe states that Hrothgar is an Old English name (s.n. Roger).
Ekwall lists Gytingbroc as a variant of the name Guiting and dates it to 780.

4.Kjartan Stafngrimsson

New name and device.

Argent, an octopus azure.

The submitter seeks a masculine name and makes no request for authenticity. He will allow minor changes.
Four instances of Kjartan as a masculine given name are listed in Geirr Bassi Haraldsson's "The Old Norse Name". The name is said to be of Celtic origin.
A single instance of Stafngrimr as a masculine given name is given in the same work. According to the rules given on page 17 this name would become Stafngrimsson when used as a patronymic (following the example of Grimr).
