Warmest greetings unto the College of Heralds of the Kingdom of Lochac, and unto any others who may read this missive from Wakeline de Foxley, Crux Australis Principal Herald

From Crux Australis

Greetings to you all, I trust that you are all well.

I don't have much to say this month, other than to say that Massaria Baryl has volunteered to produce the CAMeLs from now on. Needless to say, any delays in their production are my doing - not hers!

Submission Requirements

Cost: $20 per new submission (name, device or badge). No cost for resubmissions (within the permitted time limit) or branch submissions. Note: a new name and device costs a total of $40. Make cheques or money orders payable to "SCA Inc. College of Heralds". Do not send cash through the post!

Copies required:

NAMES: Two (2) copies of both the form and ALL documentation, including title page of each book NB: The title page is not the same as the book cover! Essays about a submitter's persona may be entertaining, but do NOT constitute documentation. When citing web sites as documentation, you must include a printout of the pages used. Please don't staple your forms, paperclips are fine and loose is ok too.

DEVICES AND BADGES: Four (4) colour copies and one (1) black & white OUTLINE copy. The colour copies should be accurately coloured, preferably in felt tip pen. Colour printers or faint coloured pencil is not acceptable. The colours must be visible across a crowded Herald's meeting. Laurel has requested that gold pen NOT be used, as it deteriorates in files and turns to glue. Please don't staple your forms, assuming that all goes well at kingdom level they are separated and go to four different homes. Paperclips are fine and loose is ok too.

Please include ALL necessary documentation to support each submission. It is the responsibility of the submitter to present their submission in a way that makes registration easy. Name documentation should be as accurate as possible. Failure to provide sufficient documentation is a cause for return of your submission. If you are having trouble with your documentation then speak to your local herald. If they can't answer your specific question, consider writing to Blazons, or contacting me. If I don't know the answer but I will at least be able to point you in the direction of someone who will.

Submissions Forwarded to Laurel

1. Ludwig von Lichtenstein

New name (see Returns for Device).

The submitter seeks a male name and makes no request for authenticity. He will accept minor changes and in the event of such changes cares most about the sound of his name.

Talan Gwynek's "Medieval German Given Names from Silesia" lists occurances of Ludwig in 1280 and 1407 and of variants Lodwig in 1370 and Lodewig in 1352.[http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/names/bahlow_v.htm]. The use of Lichtenstein in names is exemplified by Ulrich of Lichtenstein, a German minnesinger who lived from 1200 to 1275 and whose work is discussed in the encyclopaedia Britannica. Submissions Returned by Crux

1. John Bucstan de Glonn

Device Resubmission.

Per chevron azure and gules a fluer-de-lys within an orle Or.

This submitter originally submitted the device "Per fess indented azure and gules, in chief two fleur-de-lys Or" to Crux in May 2005 and then subsequently requested it to be withdrawn from consideration by the College of Arms, as recorded on Lochac's July LoI. He hereby presents this device as his intended choice.

We are returning this for a redraw as the per chevron line of division is too shallow.

2. Ludwig von Lichtenstein

New device.

Per chevron gules and Or, in base a cross fleury sable

This device is being returned for a redraw. We could find no depiction of a cross fleury that looks like that submitted. In addition the per-chevron field division is far too high. Divisions of the field into two parts should always strive to break the field into parts of equal area.

We believe that this device is clear at this time, but note the following registrations which are close:
Michel de Groot "Quarterly argent and gules, a cross fleury sable" registered November 2004 and Richard Ravenglas the Pure "Tierced per bend azure, Or, and argent, a cross fleury sable registered August 1981. In both cases there is a CD for the field and a second for the in-base position of the submitter's cross.

Submissions Pended by Crux

1. Konrad von Strassburg

Device Resubmission.

Per bend sinister embattled argent and sable, in canton an eagle displayed sable within a bordure counterchanged.

This submitter has made two previous attempts at registration of a device. The first "Per bend sinister argent and sable, in canton an eagle displayed sable within a bordure counterchanged" was returned by Laurel in July 2003 for conflict with Romulus di Falco, "Per bend sinister argent and sable, a falcon displayed head to sinister, within a bordure, all counterchanged." A later attempt with the blazon "Per bend sinister embattled argent and sable, in canton an eagle displayed sable within a bordure counterchanged" was return at an unknown time by Giles Leabrook when he was Crux presumably for a redraw of the line of divison.

The line of division is somewhat problematic in this case, but after much discussion we decided this was not the best way to depict the embattled line of division over the counter changed bordure. Crux will contact the submitter to discuss how best to depict this device. (Note also that the forms arrived seriously damaged from being wet when placed in the envelope and would have had to be reproduced from scratch regardless).

The submitter's name was registered on the July 2003 LoAR.
