Warmest greetings unto the College of Heralds of the Kingdom of Lochac, and unto any others who may read this missive from Wakeline de Foxley, Crux Australis Principal Herald

From Crux Australis

Greetings to you all,
I have been looking back over many of the returns that I have made over the last few months. It strikes me that the vast majority have been for mistakes that are relatively minor and many could have been caught a the local level. As much as anything this message is a plea to any submitters that happen across this message: please, consult your local herald before sending off your submission. They may well save you time and effort.

If I don't know the answer but I will at least be able to point you in the direction of someone who will.

Submissions Forwarded to Laurel

1. Clovis Virius Tacitus

New Name and device

Vert vetu ployé, a roundel argent within a bordure vert.

The submitter seeks a masculine name and makes no request for authenticity. He will allow minor changes and cares most about sound in the event of any such changes. Subsequent communication with the submitter revealed that he intended the name to be Carolingian.

This name was pended at the August meeting for further clarification from the submitter.

Five instances of Clovis may be found in Aryanhwy merch Catmael's "Masculine & Feminine Names from the Merovingian Line c.400-c.600 AD" [http://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/other/merovence.html, accessed 23rd June 2005].

Virius may be found in a list of Roman Nomina in an article entitled "Roman Names" [http://www.larp.com/legioxx/nomina.html, accessed 23rd June 2005].

Tacitus is a byname meaning "He who doesn't speak, the quiet one" which may be found in the article "On Choosing a Roman Name" [http://www.novaroma.org/via_romana/names.html, accessed 23rd June 2005].

We could not justify the name as Roman because of the Frankish first element. According to Meradudd Cethin's article " Names and Naming Practices of Regal and Republican Rome" http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/names/roman/ those entering Roman society would have adopted a wholly Roman name.

We could find no evidence for three element Frankish names. We do however note that several Carolingian Kings had bynames, at least in translation. Examples include the three Pippins (the elder, the middle and the younger), Charles Martel (Charles "the hammer") and Louis the Pious. Charlemagne, of course, also has the character of given name+byname.

Given the above examples, we believe that Clovis Tacitus is a reasonable approximation at a documentary form of an early Frankish name. The submitter has agreed to allow the second element of the submitted name (Virius) to be dropped if it is necessary to allow registration of the name.

We have preserved the name in its original form in the hope that the College might be able to do more with it than we could.

2. Iosbail inghean Mhartainn mhic Donnchaidh

New name.

This name was originally submitted as Iseabail inghean Mhartainn mhic Dhonnchurdh to Crux in October 2004. At that time is was pended as Iseabail was not a documentable spelling (according to St. Gabriel report #2354 this is the modern Scottish Gaelic form of the name) so the submitter was asked to consider several period alternatives.

The submitter seeks a feminine name that is authentic in both time and language/culture for Scottish 1560+ Gaidhlig. The submitter will allow minor changes and cares most about language/culture.

Sharon L. Krossa's draft article "Scottish Gaelic Given Names: For Women" [http://www.medievalscotland.org/scotnames/gaelicgiven/women.shtml, accessed 26th October 2005] cites the spellings Iosbail and Iosobal as occurring in the 16th century.

In the section on male names, Krossa's article provides citations for Donnchadh between 1300 and 1600, and for Mártainn in the 16th century. [http://www.medievalscotland.org/scotnames/gaelicgiven/men.shtml, accessed 26th October 2005]

3. Konrad von Strassburg

Device Resubmission.

Per bend sinister embattled argent and sable, in canton an eagle displayed sable within a bordure counterchanged.

This submitter has made three previous attempts at registration of a device. The first "Per bend sinister argent and sable, in canton an eagle displayed sable within a bordure counterchanged" was returned by Laurel in July 2003 for conflict with Romulus di Falco, "Per bend sinister argent and sable, a falcon displayed head to sinister, within a bordure, all counterchanged." A later attempt with the blazon "Per bend sinister embattled argent and sable, in canton an eagle displayed sable within a bordure counterchanged" was return at an unknown time by Giles Leabrook when he was Crux presumably for a redraw of the line of divison. The third attempt was pended by Crux last month as the forms were water damaged and the depiction of the embattled line of division was incorrect.

The line of division is somewhat problematic in this case and having contacted the submitter and much discussion we decided this was the best way to depict the embattled line of division over the counter changed bordure.

The submitter's name was registered on the July 2003 LoAR.

4. Leifr Hrafnsson

Name Resubmission (see returns for device).

This name was originally submitted as "Oddleifr Hrafnsson" in February 2003 during the tenure of Giles Leabrooks as Crux. There are no records to indicate what happened in the original case but copies of the device submission form were found in the Crux files (in someone else's folder) during the great file sorting excercise conducted by Massaria Baryl. It seems no action was ever taken on the name and the device was probably returned by Giles in December 2003. After consultation with Crux the submitter has indicated he wishes the firstname to be simply Leifr.

The submitter seeks a male Norse name but makes no request for authenticity. He will allow any changes and in the event of such changes cares most about sound.

Leif and Hrafn may both be found as given names in Geirr-Bassi. None of the rules for the formation of patronymics in Geirr-Bassi are directly applicable to Hrafn, but we believe that the submitter's guess is reasonable. We are comforted by the several previous registrations of this form of the patronymic.

5. Southron Gaard, Barony of

Augmentation of Arms.

Gules, a tower Or, the base environed of a laurel wreath, in chief three mullets argent, all within a bordure embattled Or and for augmentation, on a canton azure four crescents argent conjoined in saltire points outward.

The barony's current device, "Gules, a tower Or, the base environed of a laurel wreath, in chief three mullets argent, all within a bordure embattled Or", was registered in January 1999.

An Augmentation of Arms was granted to the Barony at Caid Coronataion in June 2002 by their majesties Guilluame de Belgique and Felinah Tifarah Arnvella Memo Hazara Khan-ad-Din.

A petition of support that meets the requirements of the administrative handbook is included with the submission.

Submissions Returned by Crux

1. Leifr Hrafnsson

Device Resubmission.

Argent six tuns sable and a chief nebuly gules.

This device was originally submitted during the tenure of Giles Leabrooks as Crux. There are no records to indicate what happened in the original case but a single copy of the device submission form was found in the Crux files (in someone else's folder) it seems no action was ever taken on the name or device.

We are returning this for a redraw as the tuns are unidentifiable and the black line denoting the chief is so thick it appears to be a chief nebuly gules fimbriated sable.

Submissions Pended by Crux

1. Lowry ferch Gwenwynwyn ap Llewelyn

New device.

Per bend Or and Vert two garbs issuant from the line of division counterchanged.

This device was originally submitted at heralds point at Pennsic. It is unclear that emblazon is reproducible from the blazon due to the offset of the garbs. However, if they were to be centered they would loose their identifiability. It is similar to Germanic lines of division based on plants. This might be acceptable as a similar variant.

We are pending this to conduct further research into this issue.

The submitter's name was registered on the July 2003 LoAR.
