Submission processing
All heralds ( particularly group heralds ) are reminded when they receive a submission that:-
Website Revamped
Hopefully by now you will have all
seen the revamped website. I’ve tried to make it user-friendly for
both heralds & non-heralds alike and include as much relevant information
as possible. If there is anything that I have not included and you think
should be on the website please let me know, also let me know if you
encounter any problems with the site.
The Lochac college of heralds is healthy
and growing stronger. Remember the college is the sum of it’s individual
components – you.
Be happy, be safe, enjoy your heraldry.
William Castille

Cost: $20 per new submission (name, device or badge). No cost for resubmissions (within the permitted time limit) or branch submissions. Note: a new name and device costs a total of $40. Make cheques or money orders payable to "SCA Inc. College of Heralds". Do not send cash through the post!
NAMES: Two (2) copies of both the form and ALL documentation, including title page of each book NB: The title page is not the same as the book cover! Essays about a submitter's persona may be entertaining, but do NOT constitute documentation. When citing web sites as documentation, you must include a printout of the pages used. Please don't staple your forms, paperclips are fine and loose is ok too.
DEVICES AND BADGES: Four (4) colour copies and one (1) black & white OUTLINE copy. The colour copies should be accurately coloured, preferably in felt tip pen. Colour printers or faint coloured pencil is not acceptable. The colours must be visible across a crowded Herald's meeting. Laurel has requested that gold pen NOT be used, as it deteriorates in files and turns to glue. Please don't staple your forms, assuming that all goes well at kingdom level they are separated and go to four different homes. Paperclips are fine and loose is ok too.
Please include ALL necessary documentation to support each submission. It is the responsibility of the submitter to present their submission in a way that makes registration easy. Name documentation should be as accurate as possible. Failure to provide sufficient documentation is a cause for return of your submission. If you are having trouble with your documentation then speak to your local herald. If they can't answer your specific question, consider writing to Blazons, or contacting me. If I don't know the answer but I will at least be able to point you in the direction of someone who will.
The February meeting was held on Saturday the 27th of January 2007.

1. Aliénor of Essewell New Device Argent, a rabbit couchant sable and a bordure per saltire vert and gules. Aliénor’s name was registered on the Sept 06 LoI. |
|
|
2. Androu le Greyn New Name and Device Vert, a thistle slipped and leaved within an orle embattled on the inner edge argent. The submitter requests a male Scottish name meaning “Andrew the Green”. He is equally concerned with Language/Culture and Meaning, and will accept ALL changes. Androu This spelling of Andrew can be found recorded in Dunfermline where one example is found in 1438. Uckelman, Sara L, 15th-Century Scots names from Dunfermline, http://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/scots/dunfermline.html le Greyn Greyn is a Scots spelling of Green, which can be found in the Dictionary of the Scots Language s.n. Grene “ And swa sowth … to the furd of Dersy vest the greyn rod; 1458” http://www.dsl.ac.uk/dsl/ Reaney and Wilson state that whilst the name Green is usually toponymical in origin “occasionally we may have [green] in the sense of ‘young, immature’, c.f. the French [Vert], [Levert].” |

3. Angele Marie de Savingny Request for reconsideration - Name
Submitted on the Lochac LoI of 26 June 06 as item (1), this name was submitted with a typographical error. The name should have been [Angele Marie de Savigny]. The documentation for the last element was correctly listed: “Savigny appears as a header spelling in Reaney and Wilson [2]. Variants of the name are cited from as early as 1086 until after our period”. Hund noted in his August 16 LoC “The surname is mis-spelt as the documentation is for the Savigny and not for the variation submitted.” This appears to be the only comment dealing with the last element of the name. Reaney and Wilson list a number of variants [de Sauenie], [de Sauigneo], [de Sauigni], and [de Saueigni], but not the form that has been registered. Given these citations, and the common substitution of u/v we believe the name to be reasonable, and request that the registration be corrected. |

4. Anskettell Dangerfyld New Name
Anskettell can be found in Withycombe dated to 1605, where Camden says it was “used much in the ancient house of Mallories”. [Dangerfield] is a header form in Reaney & Wilson, meaning from ‘one of the places named Angerville in Normandy’. The spelling Dangerfyld dated to 1538-1544 is found in document C 1/975/11 in the National Archives of England. We do not have an actual copy of this document. The online catalogue http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/ lists the document as: “Richard DANGERFYLD v. William NEVYLL.: Costs of an action against William Flesshall for land and common of pasture of the demise of defendant in Wyke near P[ershore?].:[WORCESTER ?]” As the forms [Dangerfield], [Dangerfeals] and [Dangerfeld] are also listed in the catalogue dated between 18 and 42 Eliz. We do not believe that spellings have been regularised in the catalogue entries. Submitted as [Ansketil Dangerfeild], and with documentation dated outside the ‘grey zone’, the name originally had a temporal disparity of greater than 400 years between elements. After consulting the submitter we have changed the name to a form that better matches his requested time period. |

5. Conán Ó Cúáin Móir New Name
Conán meaning ‘hound, wolf’ is a header form in Ó Corráin & Maguire. There were apparently six saints of this name. Ó Cúáin Móir ‘of the line of Cúán the Great/Big’. Constructed according to Krossa, Charon L, Quick and easy Gaelic names, http://www.medievalscotland.org/scotnames/quickgaelicbynames/ “The standard way to form a name using an Irish clan affiliation byname for men is [single given name] Ó [eponymous clan ancestor’s name (in genitive case]”. According to Jones, Heather Rose, 100 most popular men’s names in Early medieval Ireland, http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/tangwystyl/irish100/ Cúáin is the genitive form of [Cúán] O’Brien, Kathleen M, Index of names in Irish annals: descriptive bynames: Mór, http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/mari/AnnalsIndex/DescriptiveBynames/Mor.shtml gives [Móir] as the Early Modern Irish Gaelic genitive form of [Mór]. Submitted as [Conan Ó Cuan Mor] we have changed the name in an attempt to correct the grammar. |

6. Constance de Colligny Device Resubmission Azure, on a fess between three mullets argent a rose gules. Submissions of an identical blazon have previously been returned at Kingdom in March 2004 for conflict with Emma de Lastone, and by Laurel on the November 2005 LoAR for conflict with Cecille de Beumund. Letters of permission to conflict for armoury that is similar to “but not identical to“, each device have now been provided by both Ladies. This name was registered on the July 2004 LoAR. |

|
7. Niall de Marseilles New Device Sable, on a bend sinister between two chalices Or three Maltese crosses palewise gules. The submitter’s name was registered in November 2001. The submitter’s previous submission, Per pale sable and Or, a goblet Or and a Maltese cross gules, was returned in Kingdom May 2003 for the appearance of marshalling. A letter of permission to conflict with Paul of Bellatrix (no mundane name & SCA signature) is included. As the submitted device does not technically conflict with Duke Paul’s, we presume that permission was sought in case a visual conflict was called. |

|
1. Anskettell Dangerfyld Device Or, a tai-chi palewise proper. Returned for conflict with Randwulf the Hermit (reg. 06/1993 via Ansteorra), "Or, in pale a t'ai-chi argent and sable and an aloe vera vert," with one CD for changing the number of primary charges. |

|
2. Saewood of Gwynedd Name This name was submitted under RfS II.4, , called the ‘legal names allowance’. This allows individuals to register elements of their legal name that cannot be documented from period sources. The allowance is only made for the actual legal name, not any variants. As the sumitted name is spelt differently to her legal name, it cannot be submitted under II.4. We were unable to document the name from other sources, and so are returning it for further work. Device: Per chevron ployé purpure and Or, in base a quatrefoil saltirewise pierced vert. As the submitter's name has been returned we must also return the device for administrative reasons. No conflicts have been identified at this time. |
