Note: a new name and device costs a total of $40. Make cheques or money orders payable to "SCA Inc. College of Heralds". Do not send cash through the post!

Copies required:

NAMES: Two (2) copies of both the form and ALL documentation, including title page of each book NB: The title page is not the same as the book cover! Essays about a submitter's persona may be entertaining, but do NOT constitute documentation. When citing web sites as documentation, you must include a printout of the pages used. Please don't staple your forms, paperclips are fine and loose is ok too.

DEVICES AND BADGES: Four (4) colour copies and one (1) black & white OUTLINE copy. The colour copies should be accurately coloured, preferably in felt tip pen. Colour printers or faint coloured pencil is not acceptable. The colours must be visible across a crowded Herald's meeting. Laurel has requested that gold pen NOT be used, as it deteriorates in files and turns to glue. Please don't staple your forms, assuming that all goes well at kingdom level they are separated and go to four different homes. Paperclips are fine and loose is ok too.

Please include ALL necessary documentation to support each submission. It is the responsibility of the submitter to present their submission in a way that makes registration easy. Name documentation should be as accurate as possible. Failure to provide sufficient documentation is a cause for return of your submission. If you are having trouble with your documentation then speak to your local herald. If they can't answer your specific question, consider writing to Blazons, or contacting me. If I don't know the answer but I will at least be able to point you in the direction of someone who will.

Lochac LoI dated 2008-03-25

Unto Elisabeth de Rossingnol, Laurel Queen of Arms; Margaret MacDubhshithe, Pelican Queen of Arms; Jeanne Marie Lacroix, Wreath Queen of Arms, and the members of the College of Arms does Tamsyn Northover, Rocket Herald, send greetings!

The Lochac College of Heralds requests that the following items be considered for registration:

1: Basil Faulke - Resub Device

Sable, three towers conjoined in pall and a bordure argent.

A device of identical blazon was returned for a redraw by Laurel on the August 2004 LoAR "The center area in between the towers should not be coloured in as if it were part of the towers. Doing so rendered the charge(s) unidentifiable." This redraw addresses the reason for that return. His name was registered on the same letter, August 2004.

2: Castelburn, Canton of - New Branch Name & New Device

Per bend embattled Or and azure, a laurel wreath and a bagpipe counterchanged.

No major changes.
Authenticity NOT requested.

A constructed place name meaning `Castle/fort' `at/by' `spring/brook/stream' (though they do not explicitly state this on the forms)

All elements are taken from Ekwall 4th ed.

The construction castle + geographical feature is exemplified by "[Castelrig 1256 Fount] `The ridge of or adjoining Derwentwater Castle'" s.n. Castelrigg

The element Castle- is found in Castelforde 1155-8 s.n. Castelford `ford by the Roman fort', and Castelton 1246 s.n. Castleton `Tun by the castle', as well as the above example.

The element -burn can be found in numerous examples including Ascheburn 1188(?) s.n. Ashbourne `stream where ash-trees grow', Farnburn 1246 s.n. Fairbourne `stream by which ferns grew'.

A petition of support for the name signed by the seneschal and eight others is supplied.

A petition signed by the seneschal and ten others accompanies the device submission.

3: Genevieve de Montfleur - New Device

Per chevron argent and azure, a fleur-de-lys argent and in chief two dragonflies bendwise gules.

Genevieve's name was submitted on the Lochac Feb 28th LoI.

4: Madog Llwyd ap Madog - New Name & New Device

Per bend azure and gules, a lion rampant atop a base enarched Or.

Submitter desires a masculine name.
No major changes.
Authenticity NOT requested.

Tangwystyl's A simple guide to constructing 13th C Welch names http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/welch13.htm l gives Madog as the `standard' spelling of a common male Welsh name

Llwyd is found in the same source as the `standard' spelling of a byname meaning "gray". St Gabriel report 1363 http://www/s-gabriel.org/136 3 states that "Llwyd has a range of meanings in common usage, including shades of gray and of brown, but in personal names it very often means "gray" specifically, with the implication of "old" [1]"

5: Saint Kessog, College of - New Branch Name & New Device

Azure, within a Laurel wreath a bow fesswise drawn and knocked with an arrow Or.

No major changes.
Authenticity NOT requested.

Saint Kessog (also known as Mackessog, Kessag, and Kassog) is an Irish saint apparently born at Cashel in Tipperary/Ulster, who died circa 560.

He was once patron saint of Lennox, and was martyred at Bandry in Scotland where he had been a missionary.

Farmer, Oxford Dictionary of Saints, s.n. Kessog

A petition signed by the seneschal of the College and ten others is attached.

Correction (2008-Mar-25 21:03:38): The 3rd URL ought read www.orthodoxengland.org.uk/saintsk.htm

A petition of support for the device signed by the Senechal of the College and eleven others is attached.

Here ends Lochac's March letter of intent.

Yours in Service,

Tamsyn Northover

Rocket Herald.
