Cost: AU$17.50 or NZ$20 per new submission (name, device or badge). No cost for resubmissions (within the permitted time limit) or branch submissions. Note: a new name and device costs a total of AU$35/NZ$40. Make cheques or money orders payable to "SCA Inc. College of Heralds". Do not send cash through the post!
NAMES: Two (2) copies of both the form and ALL documentation, including title page of each book NB: The title page is not the same as the book cover! Essays about a submitter's persona may be entertaining, but do NOT constitute documentation. When citing web sites as documentation, you must include a printout of the pages used. Please don't staple your forms, paperclips are fine and loose is ok too.
DEVICES AND BADGES: Four (4) colour copies and one (1) black & white OUTLINE copy. The colour copies should be accurately coloured, preferably in felt tip pen. Colour printers or faint coloured pencil is not acceptable. The colours must be visible across a crowded Herald's meeting. Laurel has requested that gold pen NOT be used, as it deteriorates in files and turns to glue. Please don't staple your forms, assuming that all goes well at kingdom level they are separated and go to four different homes. Paperclips are fine and loose is ok too.Â
Please include ALL necessary documentation to support each submission. It is the responsibility of the submitter to present their submission in a way that makes registration easy. Name documentation should be as accurate as possible. Failure to provide sufficient documentation is a cause for return of your submission. If you are having trouble with your documentation then speak to your local herald. If they can't answer your specific question, consider writing to Blazons, or contacting me. If I don't know the answer but I will at least be able to point you in the direction of someone who will.

Agro of River Haven - Badge.
Vert, in pale a skull and two cutlasses in saltire argent.
Returned for Obtrusive Modernity. We do not believe that any design using the motif of a skull above crossed items is registerable following Laurel precedent from June 2004: [Quarterly gules and sable, in pale a jawless skull and a pair of cutlasses in saltire argent.] This violates RfS VIII.4, Obtrusive Modernity, and specifically VIII.4.b, Modern Insignia. VIII.4.b states "Overt allusions to modern insignia, trademarks, or common designs may not be registered." VIII.4 states that "'modern' is defined as anything outside the period of the Society." It was the overwhelming opinion of the College that this motif is too reminiscent of pirate designs featuring a skull above crossed items (typically bones or cutlasses) that go back only to the early 18th century. In particular (as noted by Palmer), John "Calico Jack" Rackham (hanged for a pirate in 1720) was reported to fly Sable, in pale a skull and a pair of cutlasses in saltire argent. Laurel precedent has held that "A name that, by its very presence, destroys any medieval ambience is not a name we should register." (Porsche Audi, August 1992, p.28) The same applies to armory, and designs such as this almost inevitably generate thoughts of post-period pirates, which likewise "destroy any medieval ambience". (We do not dispute the presence in period of those who practiced piracy or something closely akin to it. That is not the point.) [Alastair Corran, 06/04, R-East]

Jessica of Fearn Abbey - Device.
Sable, a chevron rompu between three quatrefoils pierced and a bordure argent.
This is returned for a re-draw of the quatrefoils pierced, at present they are not identifiable as such.
Niall of the Orkneys - Name and Device.
Sable, three snakes involved in annulo Or.
The name is returned for lack of documentation for the byname, and failure to provide copies of documentation for the given name.
The device is returned for conflict with Christoph von München, registered September 2003 (via Trimaris): Sable, in fess a billet between two annulets Or.
Lochac LoI dated 2008-06-24
Unto Elisabeth de Rossingnol, Laurel Queen of Arms; Margaret MacDubhshithe, Pelican Queen of Arms; Jeanne Marie Lacroix, Wreath Queen of Arms, the incoming Sovereigns, and the members of the College of Arms does Tamsyn Northover, Rocket Herald, send greetings!
The Lochac College of Heralds requests that the following items be considered for registration:
|
1: Elizabet Hunter - New Name Submitter desires a feminine name. Elizabet is found dated to 1303 (FA) in Withycombe s.n. Elizabeth Hunter is a header form in R&W with Simon <Huntere> 1220 Cur(Beds); Juliana <la Hunter> 1312 ColchCt. Black p. 370 has <Hunter> dated to 1259. |
![]() 2: Gryffen Bladesmyth - New Device Per pale argent and vert, two lion's heads couped counterchanged. His name was submitted to Laurel on the November 07 LoI. |
![]() 3: Layli bint HIzIr - New Name & New Device Per pale azure and gules, a phoenix Or and a bordure embattle argent. Submitter desires a feminine name. Pattern <ism> +<nasab> from Appleton, David, A, Period Arabic names and naming practices, http://heraldry.sca.org/laurel/names/arabic-naming2.ht m <Layli> is a version of the name Layla (Dark night), this transliteration found in "Layli and Madjnun In Persian Literature", http://www.artarena.force9.co.uk/perlm.ht m. <HIzIR> and <bint HIzIR> can be found in Whitcher, Ursula, Sixteenth-Century Turkish Names, http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/ursula/ottoman / "The system of transliteration used here is based on modern Turkish…. in this system the sound of the letter I depends on whether or not it is dotted. Here i stands for a dotted letter I, and I stands for the undotted letter." Submitted as Lilya bint Hizir, no documentation was provided that the spelling Lilya was found earlier than the nineteenth century. The submitter specifically stated that she would accept alternate spellings, listing Leilya/Layly/Laily and Leyla from sites unacceptable as documentation. We have changed the name to the form on the above website following the suggestion of Ursula Georges in internal commentary: "I suspect that all of the submitter's listed variants may be found as *some* transliteration of the legendary Layla's name. <Layla> or <Laila> might be the most scholarly method of transliteration, but <Layli> should be registrable and might be a better choice if the submitter wants a name sounding like "lily"." |

4: Lochac, Kingdom of - New Order Name Order of the Cross of Lochac No major changes. Follows the meta pattern <Thing>+<place> as described in Meradudd Cethin's Project Ordensnamen http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/names/order / The article gives <Scale of Castille>, <Knot of Naples>, and <Lily of Navarre> as period orders that follow this construction pattern. The cross is a well known period heraldic charge. A letter of permission to conflict has been provided by the Kingdom of Calontir "The Kingdom of Calontir, hereby gives The Kingdom of Lochac permission for the name of their "Order of the Cross of Lochac" to conflict with our "Order of the Calon Cross". We understand that this permission cannot be withdrawn one the order name is registered. Done this day April 23rd 2008 [Sig.] Anton, King; [Sig.] Isabeau, Queen; [Sig.] Gottfried, Kingdom Seneschal; [Sig.] Jadwiga Gold Falcon Principal Herald." |
![]() 5: Nesta verch Wyn - Resub Device Sable semy of cinquefoils, a chief Or Her previous submission Sable semy of cinquefoils, a chief wavy Or was returned for a redraw by Laurel March 07 " This device is returned for a redraw of the line of division; the wavy is so shallow that it is not recognizable. Even given the more shallow forms of wavy that we have registered recently, this is still too shallow." Her name was registered at the same time. |
![]() 6: Rosamond de Montfort - New Device Per chevron purpure and argent, a chevron counterchanged between three thimbles argent and a rose proper Her name was registered in Sept 06 and corrected Dec 07. |
Here ends Lochac's June Letter of Intent.
