William Marshal Tourney and Feast
Investiture of Sir Hugh the Little and Lady Theresa Cummin as fifth Baron and Baroness Stormhold, and devestiture of Master Gwynfor Lwyd and Baroness Gwir verch Madog as Fourth Baron and Baroness
2 Grand Melees were held first, with the first Grand Melee
winner receiving the tassle as victor over the field, and the second as a bit
more of a warm up for the tournies to follow. In the first melee the 27 fighters
advanced on one another from all corners of the large list field, and resounding
blows were thrown. At the end of the clash Graf Sir Cornelius von Beck stood
alone.
Thereafter closely followed the Chivalric Tourney (sword, axe or mace and
shield, or two-handed sword). There were 27 combatants. The participants were
divided into 4 fields, and each of the four fields fought a round robin. There
was one member of the chivalry in each field (His Majesty, Count Alfar of
Attica, Graf Cornelius von Beck and Sir Hugh the Little). After the round robin,
the top 2 fighters
from each field advanced to the quarter finals (His Majesty, Count Alfar, Graf
Cornelius, Sir Hugh, Berengar de Nancy, Eric Allard, Gwynfor Lwyd and Stephen
Aldred). The quarter finals were fought as a single kill, single elimination.
The victors (Count Alfar, Graf Cornelius, Berengar and His Majesty) advanced to
the semi-finals and fought another single kill, single elimination. The final,
won by Graf Sir Cornelius von Beck, was a best of three, with Berengar, who was
to be knighted the following week at the Barony of Rowany's Yule Feast was a
valiant second. The format for the Chivalric weapons
tourney is a balancing act between getting the tourney completed in a reasonable
time span, whilst allowing everyone as much fighting as possible. Double
elimination tournies, to my mind, only help the better fighters, as they get
more time on the field. The fighters who are enthusiastic, and need
tourney experience tend to only get two or three bouts in. At least this way
everyone got at least five bouts, and most got six.
Finally the Ransom Tourney was fought. Ransoms were determined by what fighting
titles or accomplishments one had. Being an authorised fighter was worth 3 gold,
and then other titles or positions added to that total. Being a squire gained
one an extra 2 gold, being a Knight, Pelican or Laurel more still, up to the
King, who was a rich target should one prevail over Him on the field. The Ransom
Tourney lasted until the fighters either ran out of ransom, or energy. The idea
is to get as much combat in as possible, making it especially valuable for
wayfaring fighters (we had large contingents from Rowany, Innilgard and
Politarchopolis). By about 4pm it was obvious that the warm conditions and the
quantity of quality fighting had taken toll of the energy of participants and
spectators alike, and folk began to drift away to the hall for the great feast
and courts of the night.
