Summer Twilight Tourney Series II

January Wrap-up St Monician and friends dancing

The following being an accounting of the formal bits of Month Three of the Summer Twilight Tourney Series the Second.

January STTS was the best so far, by my reckoning. The warmest temperature in this series, lots of people around, doing lots of things, we got a bit of rain, which cooled us down a little, much fabulous food, fun tourney and lots of dancing was still happening when I had to leave

Heavy Tourney - Poison Tourney - the first good blow to any legal target kills. As there were only 6 fighters, we used the round robin format. Gwynfor was handicapped by making his poison slower, meaning it would take him 3 good blows to defeat his opponents to their 1 to defeat him. At the end of the Round Robin, Gwynfor and Zhou had tied so they did a best of 3 normal tourney to decide the winner. (bout details found at bottom of page)

Hastletes - from Forme of Cury. Recipe used: 1/2 cup halved dried figs, 1/2 cup each unpitted dates and prunes, 1 cup raw almonds. Method: Put dried fruits on a squewer and oven grill them. rotating regularly. Also grill some raw almonds. (Note: I ran out of raisins so I used prunes. I could not obtain almonds in shell easliy and raw almonds couldnt be spitted, so roasted them seperatly. I suspect this recipe might use fresh figs, but these arent ripe yet.)

Mushroom Pastry - This was beautifully presented and I dont have a copy of it. I will try obtain it for everyone. Filling was of mushrooms, cheese, ginger, salt and pepper in a handmade crust.

Sweet Chicken Pate - Original Recipe - Thomas Dawson: "The Good Huswife", Redacted by Peter Brothers from "A Taste of History", Variation - Almond meal instead of Almonds

Venison Pie - from A Boke of Gode Cookery Recipes (Note: for venison I substituted the local bipedal venison known as Kangaroo. I had a large amount of the reserve broth from the meat so I simmered it down to concentrate the flavour. Added ore broth half way through to keep pie moist.)

Fygey - from Forme of Cury and The Historical Cookery Page. Recipe used: 100g Almond Meal, 1 1/2 cups wine (merlot), 1 1/2 cups water, 1 1/2 cups quartered dried figs, 1 cups raisins (1 cup raisins and 1 cup sultenas), 4 Tablespoons Honey, 3 teaspoons galingale. Method: Combine almond meal, wine, and water in a saucepan, stir, add a little heat. Ad dried fruit, stir and increase heat. Add honey and spices. boil for approx 15 minutes, be careful of boiling over. Necessary Substitutions: Ran out of raisin so used some sultanas, not as good I think. used galingale instead of ginger so more people with allergies could eat, left out salt to suit my modern palatte.

Samartard - from Newe Boke of Olde Cokery

Crisples - from New Boke of Olde Cokery

Apple Tart - made from apples, mace, cinnimon, clovesm all spice, puff pastry and golden syrup.

Lamb Stew - Traditional

Apple Morely - 3 Coloured with Parsley, Saffron and Blue food dyd

Elizabethian Sonnet

Gilligan of St Barts

Tis said that no man can an island be
We are not meant to drift alone at sea
In forming bonds with others of our kind
We can some peace and happiness oft find.

Though solitude does oft a purpose serve
To clear the mind when all around you sways
Too much can lead to meloncilic reserve
That leads you to push all your loves away.

So share your hopes and fears both with your friends
And if you quarrel strive to make amends
For if you share the contents of your heart
A deeper bond with those you love will start.

But if you let your heart become of stone
You shall in time find you are quite alone.

Description: A sonnet, composed of fourteen lines and arranged in three quatrains and and ending couplet.

The rhyming scheme is unusual, to tantalis the intellect and broaden the scope of the rhyming guessing game in the minds of the audience (when they try to guess the rhymning word ahead of time).

The subject matter is also timeless, as relevent now as it was hundreds of years ago.

The rhythm of the words is couched in iambic pentameter; ten beats to a line and the stress on every second syllable.

Gwynfor Lwyd

I pray you will not treat disdainfully
My words couched not so eloquently
That seek to praise your grace most gainfully
Thats sets a fire with soul so fervently.

If you were a kingdom ripe to explore
Your perfect hills, snow clad and rosy peak
Your fertile vales, hidden secret and more
Of cleft and fronted sweet riverlets meek.

Spread out, a vista, a paradise and yet
So coy, unploughed by a gentle farmer,
Whose suite is not fulfilled, ignored, not let,
Marvellous bounty awaits his garner.

While words such as these appear in fun
Thy inaction I crave be soon undone.

Description: A sonnet, based on Marvell's "To his Coy Mistress" and Shakespere's own "backhanded - compliment style of sonnet", where the lady's beauty is praised in highly suggestive language and her reticence to enact amour decried. Bluntly "you're a spunk but I wish you'd put out"

Standard sonnet form, style and intent.
