Master Alexander the Potter

Personal Information

He has been involved in the SCA since 1991 and has been potting since he graduated from the Canberra School of Art in 1987. In 1999/2000 he spent a year in the Barony of Skraeling Althing, Kingdom of Ealdormere (Ottawa, Canada). Has been teaching pottery since 1988.

Elevation: 
Alex was made a Laurel at the Rowany Festival in AS XXXIII (1999). He has long been famous for his fine ceramic work which, as King Garric took great care to point out at his laurelling, has never yet failed due to intrinsic flaws.
Current interests: 
The main interest pre 1600 ceramics from a range of time periods and cultures. Byzantine & 14th C Italian Sgraffito ware are a primary focus. Decoration is inspired by marginalia in illuminated manuscripts and period fighting manuals. Other work includes Viking, English, German and Low country ceramics. Also he has run a modern pottery class making period cookware including Pipkins, Cauldron, Chafing Dish and a Skillet. The cookware was useable in the coals of a fire, just like they were in the kitchens of Europe throughout the Medieval Period. The course ended with a medieval lunch prepared in the pots that were made, using Medieval recipes.
