Especially for Webscribes

Are you a Webscribe? Join the Lochac Webministers Email list!

Read about the Golden Quill prize for Webscribes in Lochac. The judging criteria used when it was first awarded may come in handy if you are looking for ways to improve your own group's website.

Below is a slight adaptation of the job description for the Southron Gaard Webwright. It may be a useful basis for considering any webscribe position, whether for a group, guild or office. The important thing to remember is that the job essentially revolves around communication, not technology or design. Special technical or design skills can often be brought as needed in for particular projects, but the need to obtain and communicate useful and timely information is a constant!

Sample WEBWRIGHT Job Description

Role:

In charge of creating and updating Baronial Web pages and mail redirections and pro-actively keeping Baronial communications and information flowing smoothly.

Requires:

Capabilities in Website page creation, HTML, graphics manipulation, FTP and associated site management, associated computer/email support and an excellent sense for both acquisition and rapid turnaround of useful information.

Workload:

Monthly updating of the Baronial Website and addition of new material as required, especially for the calendar, so it is always as current as possible. Notifications to email lists as required, picking up information from other people's notices or comments and adding to online calendar or special pages. Typically around three or four hours a month unless you embark on a major update or expansion of some kind.

Active monitoring of local email lists is essential, wider (e.g. Kingdom) lists very desirable. Twice-annual checking/reporting of page visit statistics and numbers subscribed to local email lists desirable.

Reporting Channel:

Webwright is a sub-officer of Chronicler so should provide a Web-related summary for their quarterly report; Council attendance strongly encouraged to keep up-to-date with proposed events for calendar.

Projects:

These will vary over time and may be initiated by you, officers, special groups or Council. Significant examples in recent years have been:

Resources:

And finally:

The single most useful technical thing you can remember is to obfuscate email addresses so "spambots" are far less likely to harvest them. NEVER put a plain myaddress@somewhere.com in the HTML (including in mailto: statements). Instead, put myaddress@somewhere.com. The browser will still handle it fine, but most spambots will miss it.

Oh, and put this link somewhere on your main pages...

Suggestions and comments should be sent to the Kingdom Webwright.
