Sir Colin Cole Heraldry Prize



A new prize is to be established in memory of the late Sir Colin Cole,=20
former Garter King of Arms, former Sheriff of the City of London and a Past=
=20
Master of the Worshipful Company of Scriveners.

The intention is to encourage the study and the practice of heraldic=20
art.  The prize will be awarded annually by the Scriveners Company to any=20
student or graduate of a recognised art course (A level and above) at a=20
school or college in the United Kingdom, or any practitioner of the art of=
=20
heraldry who lives or works in the United Kingdom.

  The criteria are as follows:
1.   Entries should be in full colour and submitted on good quality paper,=
=20
vellum or board, at least A4 in size

2.   Whilst observing established heraldic principles, entries should be=20
bold and imaginative

3.   The subject matter may be any heraldic theme, from full armorial=20
bearings (either genuine or invented) to a simple device or design

4.   Entries should be accompanied by a brief written description

5.   Entrants should be under the age of 35 on 1 September 2003

Entries for the first Heraldry Prize should be submitted to The Clerk of=20
the Scriveners Company by Monday 1 September 2003 (see address below).

All entries must show the entrants name, address, date of birth, School or=
=20
College, any art courses undertaken, and any prior interest in heraldry, as=
=20
well as a brief written description of the entry on a separate sheet of=
 paper.

  The judges will include: Peter Gwynn-Jones CVO, Garter King of Arms; a=20
professional heraldic artist; the Master of the Scriveners Company; and a=20
member of Sir Colin's family.

  The prize will consist of an engrossed certificate from the Scriveners=20
Company and a cheque for =A3600, to be presented at a livery dinner or=20
reception in the City of London in late 2003 or early 2004.  The winning=20
entry will be retained by the Scriveners Company for exhibition as it sees=
 fit.
