Read below. To: kraeglas at googlegroups.com, The_Common at yahoogroups.co.uk, sca_capstone at yahoogroups.com ** Hiya Folks Last year KG hosted a 2 day workshop conducted over two weekends which involved running total fencing novices through to authorisation. So with Suth Moot/Festival just around the corner, KG is offering to run the workshop again. The workshop is open to all adults and minors aged 14 or above. Minors will need to supply a legal guardian who will need to remain on site during the workshop. The workshop is no guarantee that you will gain your authorisation as it's up to you to satisfy the normal authorisation requirements for rapier which is not difficult. The workshop will not make you a sound fencers but it's a good start. So if you are interested pls follow the following steps:- Step One:- Contact me within the next 10 days to let me know you are interested. Step Two:- Once I have a list of names we will workout dates and times. Step Three:- Before you attend the workshop read the Lochac Rapier rules. Step Four:- Attend the workshops. Outline of the Workshop:- The basic aim of the workshop is to provide budding fencers with the necessary knowledge and skills to make them safe on the field. Day One * Discuss what rapier is all about and the equipment we use. * Discuss the rules, do and don't. * Cover basic fencing terms and theory. * Basic footwork, parries, guards, hand positions, cuts and thrusts. * Offhand defensive work. * Do heaps of drills both in and out of armour. * Depending how we go maybe some free fencing against an authorised combatant. Day Two * Review of Day One. * In armour practice. * Provided the marshals feel you are safe, we will test you for authorisation. If you have any questions pls email me. Cheers Everard PS. Pls feel free to post this to other locals lists. See here for info: http://festival.lochac.sca.org/ Gilbert ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Deyel Dalziel-Charlier Date: Fri, Feb 24, 2012 at 11:06 AM Subject: [Colleges] Rowany Festival Combined Colleges Campsite and Food-Fund To: colleges at lochac.sca.org, augustine at lochac.sca.org, blessed-herman at lochac.sca.org, crispies at lochac.sca.org, malachites at lochac.sca.org, stbarts at lochac.sca.org, ursulans at lochac.sca.org Collegians of Lochac (and other interested parties), As usual, the College of St. Ursula will be running the Combined Colleges campsite and food fund. As Seneschal, I'll be taking on the role of Camp Dad, previously held for many-a-year by the inimitable Paddy. This means, amongst other things, I will be setting the menu and organising work shifts for preparation, cooking and cleaning up. To that end, I would like to know: 1. Who is planning on attending. This is the most important, funnily enough. 2. What dietary requirements you have. This includes both allergies and preferences, e.g. no peanuts, no dairy, vegetarian/vegan, etc. I'm going to have to draw the line at *more than three* requirements. If this is you, we will give you a significant discount (probably ~50%) and ask that you bring your own food to cook on the facilities we provide. If you're going to be coming from a long way out, we can organise someone picking up what you need. I'm sorry if this is a problem, but it's a matter of logistics - we need to keep costs as low as possible and keep the workload manageable. I'm willing to do whatever I can to work around this sort of thing, but we have limited resources, including time. 3. Your age - particularly whether you are over or under 18. If you are under 18, you are not legally allowed to drink and those who are cannot legally provide you with alcohol. This WILL BE enforced. Under 18s will not be permitted to drink either in the Combined Colleges campsite or in the Tavern and it will be a condition of our food fund that under 18s not bring or obtain alcohol. Also, anyone under 18 camping with the Colleges will be taken to the Tavern and identified as such to the staff. If we don't do this, the Tavern could lose its license and be fined something like $5500. I know this might seem harsh, but there are serious ethical and legal issues here, for both individuals and groups. 4. Whether you plan on fighting and if so, which day(s). War fighters in particular will be getting more breakfast prep and dinner clean-up shifts, to ensure that (a) they get to fight and (b) work is fairly distributed. 5. Whether you're willing to participate in the Martyr Auction. Speaking from experience, I highly recommend this. It's a great opportunity to meet people in the broader society and also for College fund-raising. Those are the main things - I may have more questions in the future, but if we get these handled it makes everything else much easier. Regarding cost - I can't give precise details just yet, because I don't know how many people are attending and so on. I'll let you know when we get a bit more information. If you think you're likely to have newbies in the next little while, let the Stewards know that you may have people who'll need to book late. Finally, don't forget about applying for funding. This comes in two flavours. The first is from your local equivalent of the Student Union Clubs & Societies folk. Festival is an inter-university event, that lasts for several days, with numerous valuable outcomes in terms of the stated goals of most Colleges. You can probably get a decent amount of money to put towards whatever seems most appropriate. The second is Fighter Auction money. This is probably only going to apply to those who have a long trip up. St. Ursula successfully applied for funding to subsidise the cost of getting Collegians to College War last year. I can't guarantee that every (or any) application will be successful, but it's certainly worth a try. I'm happy to help out Seneschals/Reeves/'volunteered' representatives with their applications; feel free to email me off-list. I hope to hear from you all soon.
