Keeper of the Regalia
Keeper of the Regalia
The Keeper of the Regalia is Caterine de Vantier.
What does the Keeper of Regalia do?
This is a Lesser Kingdom officer serving directly under the Crown. Essentially, the Keeper maintains the Kingdom regalia and ensures that the regalia passes from one reign to the next in good condition. For example, the Keeper will need to arrange the cleaning of Crowns or repair of the Cloaks by appropriate craftspeople when necessary. On rare occasions, the Keeper will be required to facilitate retiring of defunct regalia and the purchase of new pieces through the Council for Regalia.
As well as the normal duties of a Kingdom office (see Corpora links below), the Keeper is charged with ensuring that the Council for Regalia meets once each reign, and reporting to the appropriate offices once per reign.
Finally, the Keeper of Regalia assists and facilitates the research, design, purchase and maintenance of such Kingdom of Lochac award tokens as directed by the Crown.
What does the Kingdom of Lochac Regalia consist of?
The Kingdom of Lochac Regalia encompasses the Kingdom Crowns, Kingdom Signet Rings, Cloaks of State and the Sword of State. It also includes the Coronets (the original Principality of Lochac's coronets), mantles and Prince and Princess chains. Other items, such as the Great Seal of State, are also technically part of Regalia but are maintained by the appropriate Kingdom officers.
Images of the Kingdom of Lochac regalia and some of the awards maintained by the Keeper of Regalia can be found in the tables below.

Royal Visit Kit
One of the problems faced by our King and Queen is the vast distances of our great land. A great deal of travel is required and due to time constraints, most will be done by air. This severely curtails the amount of gear that can be carried.
Most of the well-established Baronies and Shires will be well aware of the requirements of a Royal visit and will have most of the items listed below. It is appreciated, however, that many of the smaller and more youthful groups may never have hosted a Royal visit and therefore unaware of some of the behind-the-scenes requirements for a visit to run smoothly.
The list below contains the essential items that Their Royal Majesties would ask each group to provide during a Royal visit.
This list includes:
- A Banner with the Kingdom of Lochac Device
- Chairs for the King and Queen at court. Any chair type, preferably with a back, will be very much appreciated. A length of fabric thrown over the top will always hide the most mundane of chairs too perfection.
- Something for people to kneel upon in the presence of Their Majesties. This can be cushions, a rug or square of carpet, or any combination.
- Book of Kingdom of Lochac ceremonies: this should include ALL the ceremonies because it can be difficult to ascertain ahead of time which of the ceremonies will be required.
- Dining gear: Plates, bowls, light, and drinking vessels for the King and Queen to use at meal times. (Cutlery generally brought by the King and Queen).
- A room at the site that the royalty can retire to. This is not only for changing, resting and storage of gear, it is also for meetings and discussions. A table, chairs, water and adequate lighting will be very much appreciated.
Note: with the obvious exception of the banner, none of the remaining items are required to be emblazoned with the arms of Lochac. However, please ensure that any items made by local artisans for Their Royal Majesties to use during their visit is suitably signed by the makers in some way, so that their work may be appreciated.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Gifts to the Crown:
A gift that has the Arms of the Kingdom of Lochac anywhere upon it is considered to be a gift to the Crown, rather than the people wearing them. As such, it will be retained by the person/group that so kindly presented the gift, to be enjoyed by the local populace and every visiting royalty thereafter.
A gift that does not have the arms of Lochac upon it is considered to be a gift to the people wearing the crowns. They can choose to keep it as a personal gift, or treat it as a gift to the Crown per above.
- Gifts for the Queens bits box:
The Queens gift box contains small items that the Queen may choose to give as a token of appreciation to someone who has performed a service for her. Most gifts are of the Queens own instigation but some are made by the talented artisans of the populace.
A number of queries have been raised with respect to the kinds of tokens that would be suitable for Queen to use. It is hoped that the following will provide a useful guideline for contributors wishing to do so:
- Small in size (<250g) and easily transportable without
fear of breakage.
- Labeled with the name of the artisan who made the item
and a short (<100 words) description of the piece;
its period of origin, provenance and how it was made.
- Not be made of perishable goods.
- Be useable by both gentlemen and ladies (although it is understood that this is not always possible).
- Not bear the Kingdom of Lochac arms.
Regalia, Peerage and Award Identification Tables
The information below has been distilled from SCA Lochac Corpora, Lochac Kingdom Law, SCA Corpora, the Lochac Book of Ceremonies, historical notes and current information as of December 2006. See also Canon Lore.
Please note this is NOT a definitive list of all regalia, awards badges or tokens, only of the items that the Keeper of the Regalia is required to maintain. Orders such as the Lochac Company of Archers, or Order of the White Scarf and awards such as the Grant of Arms and Award of Arms have their own badges, tokens and/or scrolls which come under the care and maintenance of other officers.
The tokens and badges shown here are the most recent incarnation of each award. The graphic elements of each token generally do not change. However, the precise size, materials etc of the token may vary over time. As an example, two variants of the medallion worn by members of the Order of the Pelican are shown. They contain the same elements of the pelican piercing her breast, but very different styles.

Note: if you are able to supply an image with a black background of any of the items not shown, please contact the Keeper of the Regalia. Thank you!
