What can I do to contribute?
There's quite a bit of hustle and bustle around SCA events and activities. It's no wonder that some people may think - "I'm not sure what to do to help" or "I don't think I have the skill". It's simpler than you think, it's just a matter of observing, and asking what can I do to help.
Making the SCA what it is and all the events and feast that we have involves a lot of work. If we all pitch in and take part in the work, it makes the job incredibly easy.
Helping out at an event
If you're at an event and have a spare five minutes and want to lend a hand, spare a thought for the stewarding team or the constable on duty. You may be the loo break they were looking for!
As with everything, before you venture in to assist, it's best to ask what the officer or stewarding need help with. It could be something from washing a load of dishes in the kitchen, minding the front gate or moving equipment from one area to another. It could be something as nice as - can I get you a drink or would you like a cup of tea.
If the member of the stewarding team refuses your offers of assistance, don't be offended. They're probably just really organised.
Everyday ways of helping at events
- Make sure that the feasting table that you were sitting at is cleaned and packed away before you go home.
Volunteering at SCA meetings
There are a bunch of things that you can do to assist the person who is in charge of running the SCA meeting. At fighter practice, there's equipment that needs moving too and from different locations. There's also lights to be put on etc. If you have some skills you may wish to volunteer to teach a class, you could run the newbie fighter practice. If you're a bit new, just chatting to new folks about what they're interested in is a vital way of just making things run smoothly.
Volunteer to make things happen!
Volunteering to be a deputy officer is always an excellent way of learning how the group system works. In same vein, offering to work on a stewarding team is also an excellent way to learn how to run an event. There are plenty of people in this Barony to guide you.
