Flame Tree Ball 2008

Flame Tree Ball heading, with the capitals FTB ornamented in the style of the banner for the Flame Tree Ball - in heraldic terms - argent, a tree eradicated sable, enflamed gules and or, and some of the other letters in enflamed

As has been the custom, the College of St Malachy and its surrounding shire of Adora being blessed with many young people of most excellent grace and vigour, doth each year hold the Flametree Ball, a most entertaining evening of dance, merriment and perchance song to the delight of all who attend.

And so, on Saturday 24th May A.S. XLIII (2008), we again open our shire and college and entreat all who would join hands with us to attend the tenth year of this celebration. In honour of the illustrious tenth anniversary, and the newly formed shire with its dragon heraldry , the theme will be of dragons "brawling" - dancing the bransles.

The hall for the ball will open at 5.30pm for dancing to commence at 6.00pm. Dance practices and a fencing tourney are planned for earlier in the day. As people arrive on site the steward asks that people present themselves to the admissions table. Please also note that entries for the Arts & Sciences Competition are expected by 5.30pm (unless other arrangements are made). Further details on the competition, fencing, and dance practices including the earlier start times are under.

The ball is being jointly run by the College of St Malachy and the Shire of Adora. Offers to give assistance with the running of the ball, dance classes and fencing tourney (eg pre-cooking, setup, cooking, cleanup, marshalling, teach dance or play music) are welcomed!

The ball will include dancing, music, as well as games and a light though generous and filling supper. Please note that in case of changes, notifications are to be made by updates to this web page.

Arts And Sciences Competition

There are now two Arts and Sciences (A&S) Competitions.

(Existing) Metalwork - not related to armour or weaponry.

This A&S competition is for creation of metal objects based on period objects or period styles which are not related to fighting (ie not armour or weapon related). This permits entry of jewellery as long as it has some metal (eg pewter, tin, bronze, copper, silver etc) and the metal may have treated by any means (eg cast, rolled, hammered, sawn, enamelled etc). Pieces must have been started after last Flame Tree to be eligible for entry in the competition.

This competition is meant to encourage people starting work (please take safety considerations into account), and in addition to any winners tokens there will be an encouragement prize awarded. So for purposes of this competition, pieces may have already been entered in other competitions.

Documentation (eg pictures and sources of original pieces, what techniques were used and safety precautions applicable) also forms part of the competition entry.

This is also meant to form part of a larger Arts & Sciences Display, so people are also encouraged to bring other items for display previously made though not able to be entered in the competition, information on period non armour metail items, as well as the means of used of making these items (hammers, saws, moulds etc).

Entrants are expected to have entries including documentation presented by 5.30pm at the admissions (troll) table or to have let the steward know that the entries will be arriving later.

(New) The Bardic Competition of Céad Amhrán (First Song).

The Shire of Adora welcomes the populace of Lochac to lighten the Flametree ball with their performance in our first bardic competition for the year, the Bardic Competition of Céad Amhrán.

Entrants are to perform one short song or poem from any period or SCA related subject. Judging will be based on performance with bonus points for original compositions and documentation.

All those who intend to enter are asked to contact the steward prior to the event. Adorans and Malachites should note their performances in this will also count towards the selection of the next shire bard.
