Words from the Baron and Baroness for October 2009

Greetings to the populace of Stormhold, including our Canton of Cairnfiel and our College of St Bartholemew (& our neighbours)

Well - we enter into interesting times.

Champions
Last month we saw our Championship tournaments - all were well contested, with our champions decided as follow:

Baron Rodrigo of Abbotsford - Infantry Combat Champion
Lord Aethan Ap Andreis - Rapier Champion
Lord Dominus Quintus Aurelius - Target Archery Champion

Our hearty congratulations to each of our champions and all who competed on the day.

This month we forgo our Monthly Bash - with most of the populace attending the Great Southern Gathering, whilst we travel off to Spring War, in the Barony of Mordenvale. We hope those of you attending the GSG have a good time & enjoy yourselves - we look forward to hearing of your exploits (we'll trade stories).

Southern Principality discussions
From a few random words serious discussions have commenced regarding the forming of a Southern Principality. At this stage it is very much in the initial stages of investigating how this would affect us and would this be an advantage or disadvantage. For any who feel they would like to be heavily involved, there has been a group set-up to discuss - please send us your interest and we will arrange to have you added to the list - at this stage it is hoped to be a small group of people involved, collecting & spreading news, feelings and ideas.

There will be a meeting to discuss this at 1pm on the Saturday at the Great Southern Gathering.

Whether you have an opinion or not, please consider being involved - asking questions, debating ideas.

Stormhold will be having a meeting to discuss the issues as they will affect Our Barony on the 4th Tuesday of October, from 8:30pm at the Kensington hall (27/10/09).

There has been a lot of information and discussion on other email lists - please feel free to discuss online leading up to this meeting in October. Through open discussion we come to consensus.

William Marshal to be a Royal Visit.
We of Stormhold are most blessed - we shall host Their Most Generous Majesties a second time during Their Reign. Yes, the King & Queen have announced that they will be attending William Marshal this December 5.
We have found a Feastocrat - but she will need help - and there will be any other jobs, big & small that will need to be done.
We impressed Lochac with the success of our Baronial Investiture & Midwinter Coronation. Lets show we can do it again with William Marshal.

As their Majesties are attending - consider carefully those around you - are there any good gentles that you know that are deserving of reward? Send your recommendations to Their Majesties, or to us and we will forward it on. This applies to those who reside in our neighbouring groups as well.

We are not sure what Their Majesties plans will be for the Sunday following William Marshal - which is earmarked as a Monthly Bash - but we intend to consult with them, to see if they have any whims which may assist with - to possibly showcase the people & culture of our Southern territories.

Other thoughts . . .
On a final note, we would encourage all of you to consider what it is you enjoy about this life that we have made for ourselves within the SCA - whether it be the arts martial, arts & sciences, feasting, dancing or many other endeavours. Ask yourself what can you do (just one thing) to improve this experience for those around you, whether it be running a themed tournament, running a small event, teaching, taking on an office, or serving for a short period as a kitchen hand at a feast (or many other diverse activities).
Have you ever travelled to an event outside your group? (Remembering that but a short distance from Stormhold we have two neighbouring shires within the same city - Arrowsreach and Krae Glas, as well as a booming Shire of Borderscros but a short trip north (Albury Wodonga)). Wayfaring to another group is an excellent way to make new friends, learn new things & share ideas. Start with small steps, and you will get a taste for it. Or offer to host wayfarers when they travel here.

As they say, "The strength and stability of the Kingdom lie in these virtues of its
people: chivalry, creativity, and service - for if any of these are
lacking, the Kingdom fails."

Please consider these important words.
