Roll of ArmsHeraldry is the practice of designing, displaying, describing, and recording coats of arms and badges. The origins of heraldry lie in the need to distinguish participants in combat when their faces were hidden by iron and steel helmets. Eventually a system of rules developed into the modern form of heraldry. In the SCA, heraldry is concerned with ceremonies and Courts, the crying of announcements and proclaimations, the pomp and circumstance of the Tournament, and the authentication and registration of members' persona names and arms or badges. These areas of interest give rise to the terms "court heraldry" and "field (or list) heraldry" (both also known as "voice heraldry") and "book heraldry" (which also includes the background work and research in arranging ceremonies). The SCA has its own College of Arms. Below are examples of heraldry for notable members from Stormhols past: The Barons and Baroness of Stormhold Styvren Longshanks and Rhyllian of Starfire Retreat Alain Lorenz and Lucrezia Lorenz Sven Stormdriven and Ingabjorg Ambasdottir Rudolf von der Drau and Nicollette Dufay Gwynfor Llwyd and Gwir ferch Madog Hugh the Little and Teresa Cummins By Thorfinn at 5 Oct 2005 - 10:19pm | Stormhold | Baron & Baroness | Heraldry | login or register to post comments | printer friendly version | 1429 reads
